Broad Roots: Richard Grainger & Chris Parkinson

Richard writes big bold songs and is unique among English folk artists with a distinctive style deeply rooted in northern traditions.

With his love for the tradition, his songs enthral, and some have even been described as ‘spine tingling’, he has an  infectious enthusiasm for his subject, making him a stand-out singer in the folk genre  and the world of song-writing.

Performing with CHRIS PARKINSON, Richard’s great lyrical power and inspired guitar playing are matched perfectly by Chris’s superb musicianship and his magical, exquisite accompaniments.

Their repertoire of original, traditional, maritime, industrial, humorous songs, romantic ballads and uplifting tunes make for a great evening of thought-provoking entertainment.

Richard regularly plays in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and all over the UK and has featured on Radio & TV, recorded 14 albums and has worked with Sir David Attenborough on his project ‘Eye of the Wind’

The Mayfly exists to bring high-quality arts and creativity to the local community. It is essential that our programme is accessible to all comers, regardless of their ability to pay. At the same time, we see it as equally crucial that our artists are paid properly for the work they produce and perform with us. With this in mind, for entry to our ticketed events, we invite you to choose what payment you are able to make: our standard price, a bit more, or a bit less. Please be mindful that our artists are independent freelancers who need to make a living. We all want both them and The Mayfly to thrive and prosper. Pay a little if you don’t have a lot; pay generously if you can afford to. And there’s always a donation pot in the café to help us put on future events.

And finally, please bear in mind that as space is extremely limited, we’d greatly appreciate it if you could let us know well in advance if you’re unable to attend.

Thank you.
