April Exhibition: in Between Days (Paul Tucker)

Paul is a freelance photographer who lives and works in East London and has worked extensively with galleries, artists and designers. Alongside his commercial work, he has developed a body of personal work that concerns the natural and urban landscape, often taking the viewer’s attention to the mundane or overlooked and bringing a powerful new resonance to the subject at hand.

Paul grew up on the south coast of England and the seaside provided an early subject to explore and his fascination with it has continued since. The undefined space that lies between the land and the sea around the British coastline has been a constant in his work.

There can be a pervading sense of nostalgia in images that echo past glorie of the seaside holiday. This often contrasts with the quiet emptiness of those landscapes that we see today.

Paul has been regularly visiting East Anglia from London over the last thirty years or so. When he was invited to exhibit at The Mayfly it provided an opportunity to bring together photographs he has taken in and around Lowestoft during the last eight years.

‘Inbetween Days’ refers to those chances to take time away from London and explore the area but also the to the sense that Lowestoft itself is in a state of flux. As well as looking outward to sea Paul has turned his camera inward to the more urban and industrial spaces behind the scenes. His images capture a moment in time and this imparts his own particular sense of place.
